Het internationale symposium „Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space”, georganiseerd door KVVAK en de DutChinese Foundation, brengt wetenschappers, curatoren, archeologen en kunstenaars bijeen om het blijvende erfgoed van het Chinese Longquan-aardewerk te verkennen. 

Het Longquan-aardewerk, bekend om zijn stralende celadon glazuur en uitzonderlijk vakmanschap, ontstond in Zhejiang tijdens de Song-dynastie en ontwikkelde zich tot een van de meest invloedrijke keramiektradities ter wereld. Via maritieme en landroutes verspreidde Longquan-aardewerk zich over Oost-Azië, Zuidoost-Azië, het Midden-Oosten en Europa, en heeft het gedurende vele eeuwen de artistieke smaak, de handelsbetrekkingen en culturele ontmoetingen gevormd. 

Dit symposium onderzoekt Longquan-celadon vanuit meerdere perspectieven: archeologie en technologie, ovenorganisatie en productie, handel en verspreiding, verzamelgeschiedenis, museumpraktijken, conservering en hedendaagse artistieke herinterpretaties. Door de bewegingen van voorwerpen door de tijd en over regio’s heen te volgen, trachten we te begrijpen hoe Longquan-keramiek in diverse culturele contexten is gemaakt, gebruikt, gekoesterd en opnieuw vormgegeven. Met de nadruk op dialoog over disciplines en grenzen heen nodigt ‘Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space’ deelnemers uit om de mondiale betekenis van celadon te heroverwegen en nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden te bevorderen voor de studie, het behoud en de waardering van dit opmerkelijke keramische erfgoed.

The international symposium Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space organized by KVVAK and DutChinese Foundation brings together scholars, curators, archaeologists, and artists to explore the enduring legacy of Chinese Longquan ware. Renowned for its luminous celadon glaze and exceptional craftsmanship, Longquan ceramics emerged in Zhejiang during the Song dynasty and developed into one of the most influential ceramic traditions in the world. Through maritime and overland networks, Longquan wares traveled across East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, shaping artistic tastes, commercial exchange, and cultural encounters over many centuries.

This symposium examines Longquan celadon from multiple perspectives: archaeology and technology, kiln organization and production, trade and circulation, collecting histories, museum practices, conservation, and contemporary artistic reinterpretations. By tracing the movement of objects through time and across regions, we seek to understand how Longquan ware has been created, used, treasured, and reimagined in diverse cultural contexts.

Centered on dialogue across disciplines and borders, Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space invites participants to reconsider the global significance of celadon and to foster new collaborations for the study, preservation, and appreciation of this remarkable ceramic heritage.
